“When she’s not scaring the shit out of local selectmen with her top-notch reporting, Globe staffer Emily Sweeney heads the New England chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists….Which pretty much means that she spends her free time herding cats.”

“Still, Sweeney’s NESPJ is on the march, building a scholarship fund, maintaining a website and mailing list, judging journalism contests and mentoring the unfortunate souls who comprise the profession’s next generation…...Pray for her soul.”

I’ve been a staff reporter at The Boston Globe since 2001… I write stories for the paper, produce videos for the web, and blog whenever I can.  I’m telling’ ya, with technology advancing so rapidly, it’s an exciting time to be working in da news business.

For the past few years I’ve also been serving as president of the New England chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. We hold events for media-minded folks throughout the year, and every October we throw a huge Halloween bash to raise money for our chapter scholarship fund.

When I’m not pursuing journalistic endeavors, you can usually find me at a local ice skating rink (playing hockey)  or running around a field (playing soccer).   Oh, and hey — if you live in the Boston area, and you’re interested in playing pick-up street hockey sometime, let me know . We occasionally play pick-up games in Southie and Roslindale, and we’re always looking for extra players.

“Emily Sweeney offers sound advice for reporters looking to improve their reportorial multimedia skills — quick, cheap (often free), easy things for journalists to do that will help them become digital citizens, if not digital natives.”

...in the press:

“…..one of the hipper writers

for the  Boston Globe...”                                                                                                                                               - Bostonist.com

“Emily, a lifelong Bostonian, has been sharpening her videography skills to support the stories she writes (‘for the best newspaper evah,’ she says). Check out some of the cool clips she’s captured from the field — and ask her for tips and tricks that’ll help you do the same.

“One clip you really need to see is Emily’s video promoting Bloodfeast 2006. This club-crazed Halloween party…..will feature DJ Punketta and some of the finest techno music known to mankind. Proceeds will benefit the New England chapter’s journalism scholarship fund.”
